Welcome to Ms. Slattery’s Fourth Grade
About Ms. Slattery:
This is Ms. Slattery's fourth year at Lone Rock School. She came here after doing her student teaching here with Mrs. Nicholls.
Questions and Answers:
What are the highlights of your school year?
I consider the Annual 4th Grade Art Show to be a highlight. Students create personal artwork, we display it in a gallery (the lunchroom), and the students teach their parents, their family, and the community an art lesson. The first year they taught "Rhythm of Flight", and last year they taught "Gyotaku Fish Printing". The students also sell note cards with original student works on them. Students always impress me with the mature way they work with the public.
I also enjoy our volcano and earthquake unit, when students create their own independent projects. I have had students make movies, write plays, paint murals, and build Richter scales.
What are the interesting projects your class works on?
This year my students are creating portfolios of their best work to show their parents at Parent/Teacher conferences. The students are working on writing down the "essential knowledge" for each subject. This way they know up front the expectations the school and I have for their learning.
What is the best part of teaching at Lone Rock? Why do you like teaching here?
The best part of teaching is getting to know each of the students and watching them mature and grow. I love it when students "get" something new. I think smaller class sizes give students an opportunity for more one-on-one instruction, and an opportunity for everyone to share ideas.
