June 3, 2021

Dear Lone Rock Students, Families, Teachers and Staff,

While this has certainly been a challenging year, we believe it has been one of Lone Rock’s finest. When we started the school year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, our goals were clear: we wanted to keep infections and transmission low among our students and staff and we wanted to keep our students learning, whether they chose distance learning or to return to school after the disruption from COVID-19 last spring. At school, we wanted to be able to remain open, enjoying sports, adult education and other extracurricular activities to the greatest extent possible. Our plans included physical distancing, mask-wearing, regular disinfection and rapid response to positive cases with guidance from the Ravalli County Department of Public Health.

As we wrap up the school year we’ve accomplished what we set out to do last fall. Lone Rock operated continuously this school year, we had low numbers of positive cases and relatively few absences among students and staff. Our small classes have enabled our teachers not only to bridge gaps caused by school closure last spring but in many cases to advance student academic achievement ahead of traditional benchmarks. Our students are prepared for continued success as they progress next school year.

Our duty as trustees is to navigate complex, difficult and occasionally polarizing issues not for our personal interest or opinions, but to consider in the most holistic manner possible the impacts to our students, teachers, staff and their families, extended families and our community. It is difficult work but it is worthwhile and vitally important.

We write today to thank you for the patience, thoughtful conversation, ideas, respect and kindness shown across the district this year. Over the summer, the board will continue to work closely with school leaders on strategic planning, budgeting, school operations and preparations for welcoming students back again in a few short months. Please know that we will continue to monitor COVID-19 and how best to mitigate impacts and risk for this next academic year and beyond. We share the hope that next academic year more closely resembles that of one prior to the pandemic.

We congratulate our 8th graders on their promotion to high school, thank our dedicated Lone Rock employees and wish everyone a fantastic summer filled with many of the events and activities we missed last year.

Be well,

Lone Rock School District Board of Trustees

Lone Rock School is located in the heart of the Bitterroot Valley, tucked up against the Sapphire Mountains.

We opened in 1885 and have been in continuous operation since. We are a Title I school and our student enrollment hovers around 195, with about 22 students per grade.

Our staff is dedicated to providing a healthy and enriching learning experience, in a very "family" setting.
